What I've come to realize after living in Central Virginia for more than a decade, is that both images can not only coexist, but thrive together. Indiana is truly the crossroads of America. Located in the heart of the Midwest, Indiana is nationally known for its friendly hospitality, exciting basketball, and excellent higher education system. From the cornfields to the big city, the Hoosier state offers numerous opportunities to any student.

Today, many students are choosing to attend college on a part-time basis. Why? Is it out of a desire to go to college while working or out of necessity? The answer is probably both. If traditional students sidestep the opportunity to attend college right out of high school, or do attend college and leave without getting their degree, it probably isn't the right time for them.

It is usually later in life that these now 20, 30 and 40-year-olds find strong reasons to become students again. This is not an impulsive decision. The thought can linger for years before it becomes a reality. In many cases, life circumstances create the motivation. Having a better life for themselves and their families, maintaining that competitive edge in the job market, looking for career opportunities in the way of advancement or a salary increase, all offer the end result they seek.

In order to truly discover the benefits of a liberal arts education, we must first define its meaning. A liberal arts education is a broad-based education in which a student studies a variety of different subjects in order to gain a better working knowledge of the world around him or herself, rather than focusing in and specializing in one specific area. The liberal arts education prepares the student for a lifetime of opportunities and changes.

As an Admission Counselor, one of the largest parts of my workday is interviewing prospective students. One of the very first and most important questions I ask them is "What do you want to study?" If I were to guess, approximately seven out of ten times, the student replies either "Liberal Arts", or just plain "I'm not sure". It is at this point in the interview that I reassure the student that they are most likely making a very wise choice in selecting a liberal arts college. I tell them this for a few reasons. First and foremost, at age eighteen, most people do not know what they want to do next weekend, let alone what they want to do for the rest of their lives.

A Department of Labor report projects that 80 percent of the children beginning kindergarten will eventually enter jobs that don’t even exist today! This startling projection has the ring of truth when we consider all the changes that have taken place in the workplace over the past 10-15 years: e-mail and voice mail becoming essential work tools; the pervasive use of the Internet to complete business transactions ranging from advertising and shopping to banking; instantaneous Web-based access to information on almost any subject; computer chip technologies installed in machines that we take for granted, from air conditioners to vacuum cleaners.

The purpose of a liberal arts curriculum is to help students fulfill their responsibilities as citizens and grow into cultured and versatile individuals. A liberal education is concerned with the development of moral, spiritual, and aesthetic values as well as analytical abilities. Intellectually, a liberal arts education encourages students to develop their curiosity, embrace uncertainty, and explore.

Ohio has a rich tradition of advocating for education, dating back to the formation of the state in 1803, from a portion of the Northwest Territory.

"Two hundred years ago, settlers transformed Ohio wilderness into civilization," said Governor Bob Taft, in his 2002 State of the State speech. "Generations later, the pioneers of flight and light conquered another frontier to make Ohio a powerhouse of the industrial revolution. Now it's our turn. We are the pioneers of Ohio's third frontier—a frontier of exploration and discovery where knowledge is king."

What do Madeleine Albright (former U.S. Secretary of State), Rachel Carson (author), and Hillary Rodham Clinton (U.S. Senator), all have in common? They all graduated from a "women's college" in the United States.

Many high school students are unaware of the benefits of attending a women's college. Other students simply refuse to consider the possibility. Only about 2% of young women nationwide say they chose their school specifically because it was a women's college. That means that many students who enroll at women's colleges are doing so for other reasons. What could these reasons be?
